north.io's Hackathon Team completes App in 24 Hours and wins the DataRun2023

Kiel. On Sunday, August 31, north.io traveled to Sesimbra (Portugal) with extensive equipment to participate in the international NATO exercise REPMUS 2025. Ten employees will be on site to use north.io's Ocean Big Data Platform together with the German Navy, which is leading the mine countermeasures. It serves as a central interface for the processing and integration of all underwater sensor data, making north.io the digital enabler of this large-scale exercise and creating a “transparent ocean.”
Among other things, a powerful server infrastructure, a large tent, multiple digital workstations, and other technical equipment will be used. Oktoberfest items are also included in the luggage to introduce international partners to a special part of German culture. Rheinmetall's Harbour Protection Container will serve as the on-site base for the north.io team, among other things: this is where the data from all the modern systems used to locate mines and protect infrastructure will converge.
"With our Ocean Big Data Platform, we are creating the digital foundation for one of NATO's largest experimental exercises on maritime security. We are proud to be the enabler at REPMUS 2025, ensuring that underwater sensor data is transferred to the joint situation picture, a step towards a truly ‘transparent ocean'," says Jann Wendt, CEO of north.io, before his departure.
In addition, Wendt sees Portugal as an opportunity to establish closer cooperation with numerous hardware and software providers, including the Danish software specialist Systematic. Their SitaWare software, for example, provides the common operational picture for many navies, including the German Navy. “Our Ocean Data Platform technology could expand these systems to include underwater data in the future, thus providing a valuable addition,” adds Wendt, who will also be on site in Portugal.
The REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems) exercise is one of NATO's largest international exercises in the field of maritime security. It brings together over a dozen nations, NATO structures, universities, and industry partners. The aim is to test unmanned systems, new multidomain concepts, and innovative approaches to protecting maritime spaces.
north.io has been committed to maritime security for years: from supporting authorities in Germany – such as the Schleswig-Holstein Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service – to projects with the offshore industry and the European ARGUS project for the protection of critical underwater infrastructure. north.io already took part in the international REPMUS exercise last year.
By participating in REPMUS 2025 and the parallel NATO Dynamic Messenger exercise, north.io is sending a clear signal: the company provides the digital foundation for modern underwater operations.
For mine countermeasures alone, 300 participants from 14 nations are expected at REPMUS. Twenty-six different aerial drones and 71 underwater drones will be comprehensively tested under real-world conditions.
