2022: Putting Offshore Big Data in the Spotlight

Having established TrueOcean in November 2019, our focus in the early years was of course on developing our Marine Data Platform (MDP) in line with the vision and ambition that would make it an essential offshore big data tool for energy companies and marine survey companies. However, as we entered 2022 it was time to start telling the world about the game-changing solution we had on our hands.

This started with the appointment of Philippe Take as Chief Sales Officer at the beginning of the year. An experienced sales & marketing professional, Philippe’s focus has been on raising awareness of TrueOcean as a unique player among marine software companies and showing the market the efficiencies and cost saving that simplifying and harmonising offshore big data analytics can bring.

These benefits are especially relevant in the global offshore wind sector, where new production capacity targets have catalysed a development boom that demands the availability of dependable offshore marine data for locating, building, and operating new wind farms.

New targets

The growth in offshore wind was strengthened in Spring when the German Government announced its Easter Package, which calls for at least 30 gigawatts of energy to be produced offshore in the North Sea by 2030. This is joined by international commitments that amount to 330 GW of offshore wind power globally by 2030.

These targets were the talk of the town at the exhibitions we attended in 2022, as they represent significant opportunities for sustainable business growth for the industries that work together to make offshore wind power not only possible, but efficient enough to one day bring about the end of burning fossil fuels for our energy needs.

At the beginning of September, we joined SMM 2022 in Hamburg and returned for the Wind Energy Hamburg Conference & Exhibition at the end of the month. We took part in well-received panel discussion about the Marispace-X project on the Digital Transition Stage at SMM (see video), while we had our own booth at Wind Energy Hamburg which helped us to show some of the 30,000 attendees from 37 countries exactly why the industry needs our MDP to unlock the value of offshore big data.

Building our business

Marking a busy month, we started a new journey in securing our business capabilities also in September, with our selection to join the Creative Destruction Lab, a world-class mentorship program designed to guide businesses as they scale their operations from an idea to a successful commercial entity. The first meeting took place at the PIER Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and was attended by TrueOcean founder Jann Wendt, who found the experience both challenging and fruitful.

The end of September was also a key milestone in the development of our business, as GABLER Naval Technology, a company of the Lübeck-based management holding L. Possehl & Co. mbH, acquired a 24.9% stake in TrueOcean GmbH. GABLER’s investment strengthened our ability to keep growing the TrueOcean team and ensure that the capabilities of our platform stay true to the sensor and cloud-agnostic approach we established from the very beginning.

October was also a milestone month as we finally launched and unveiled the full capabilities of the TrueOcean MDP to the world, which we then followed up on with a press release direct to the marine survey and offshore energy media. By the 1st of November, the cat was officially out of the bag, and we couldn’t be more satisfied with the positive responses we received from the market.

Looking ahead

By November, we had onboarded the first TrueOcean MDP alpha users and are delighted that the companies using it to manage their subsea data have provided very positive feedback so far. While it’s early days yet, the informal feedback so far from these early adopters is that our solution could be the start of a paradigm shift in the way marine data is acquired, stored, analysed, and shared.

Looking ahead to 2023, we have a triple focus of growing the TrueOcean team, continuing to add planned new features to the platform, and gaining market traction with more early adopters in the marine survey and offshore wind sectors discovering how their work can be optimised, savings made, and value expanded using our marine data solution.

We will of course, closely monitor how existing and new users leverage the platform during their business to ensure that it provides the flexibility and functionality needed to optimise diverse workflows for all the stakeholders working towards building the infrastructure for even more clean energy produced by offshore wind farms.

Before that though, we wish our colleagues, partners, and peers the best wishes for the holiday season. We will see you again in 2023!
