north.io's Hackathon Team completes App in 24 Hours and wins the DataRun2023

Hamburg. "Marine data for the future": Government and authorities collect a large amount of high-quality maritime data, also for the protection of critical infrastructure. This data is only given a useful value by people who link and manage it in a meaningful and beneficial way and use it for risk analysis. How this could be handled even more effectively in the future with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) is what our team "north.io" wants to prove at the "DataRun 2023", the hackathon of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure from June 9 to 10.
Under the motto "Use your creativity, benefit from experience and team spirit and develop a first prototype", the team of the Kiel-based software developer will take on the challenge, in which, among other things, maritime applications are to be developed.
"We have AI capabilities for the maritime environment, we have a great interdisciplinary as well as international team, and our application area is not only red-hot right now, but also highly relevant in the future."
says Marcel Louwers, team leader at the competition.
This is because the team wants to present how the critical infrastructure in the sea, which is currently under increasing focus and threat, can be better protected. Specifically, by digitally fusing data obtained via satellite radar and other maritime surveillance sensors. This would allow them to be displayed at the comand & control level by authorities or other organizations and help them assess risk using AI: For example, to detect unauthorized vessels and deploy other effectors, such as reconnaissance drones, on them.
Jann Wendt, founder and CEO of north.io
"Our digital tools create the knowledge so our government and corporate customers can give themselves the answers and make informed decisions.",
says Jann Wendt, CEO of north.io and adds:
"We are keeping all our fingers crossed for our team, I am confident because our team combines experience from the four worlds of geospatial data: geo-Spatial, hydrographic, geo-technical and sensors."
north.io has also been developing software-as-a-service solutions for public authorities, among others, for more than 10 years, making geodata easily accessible, quickly findable, uncomplicatedly shareable and clearly understandable.
In addition, north.io is currently leading the central maritime digitization project Marispace-X in Europe together with IONOS, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economics and Climate Action. It focuses on industrial applications, for example in the offshore sector. Together with all partners, a common virtual space based on GaiaX for available maritime data is to be created for the first time by the end of 2024.
