Kiel, Germany. north.io's flagship SaaS product, TrueOcean, has been selected as the data management platform for MMinE-SwEEPER, a groundbreaking €6 million Horizon Europe initiative tackling one of Europe’s most pressing marine safety challenges: the removal of WWII-era underwater munitions.
Across Europe’s seas, millions of tons of corroding munitions pose risks to marine ecosystems, human health, and maritime industries. Over the next 3.5 years, MMinE-SwEEPER will unite 20 international partners— spanning public authorities, private enterprises, and defense organizations—to address this environmental and security issue with cutting-edge technologies.
MMinE-SwEEPER brings together experts from 20 leading public, private and defence organisations.
At the heart of the project is TrueOcean, a powerful ocean data platform that will handle Terabytes of critical data from robotic systems, 3D imaging, and AI-driven analyses. TrueOcean will make this data accessible, actionable, and secure, enabling researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to make informed decisions.
Setting New Standards in Marine Innovation
TrueOcean’s role goes beyond data management. The platform integrates defense, research, and industrial technology, supporting advanced innovations such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and AI-powered classification tools for munitions detection and recovery. By facilitating seamless collaboration among project stakeholders, TrueOcean underscores its potential as a transformative tool in marine data management. Jann Wendt, north.io CEO is confident:
"Together with our partners we can set a new standard for environmental responsibility and innovation in Europe, and we are proud that TrueOcean will play an important role in making this vision a reality".

Key partners in the MMinE-SwEEPER initiative are leading organizations from the public, private, and defense sectors including GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), French Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (Shom), National Research Council of Italy (Cnr), Royal Military Academy Belgium, Aarhus University, The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), Fraunhofer ICT Group, Bundeswehr Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons, Maritime Technology and Research Germany, Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IOPAN), Federal Police Germany, SeaTerra GmbH, IQUA Robotics, Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM), JPI Oceans and the European Climate, Environment and Infrastructure Executive Agency (CINEA).
Together, they aim to not only clear hazardous munitions but also establish a new benchmark for environmental responsibility and technological innovation in Europe. north.io GmbH’s CEO, Jann Wendt, expressed his enthusiasm for TrueOcean’s pivotal role:
“This project isn’t just about clearing the seas. It’s about driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and creating a safer, more sustainable marine environment for future generations.”
TrueOcean’s participation in MMinE-SwEEPER reinforces north.io’s position as a leader in managing underwater data, advancing ocean technology, and supporting global efforts toward a healthier, more secure marine ecosystem.
