The protection of critical underwater infrastructure with the help of maritime Big Data is the topic of the new podcast of the Maritimes Cluster Norddeutschland e. V. with Jann Wendt and Dr Sebastian Bruns from the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (ISPK).

According to Jann Wendt (initiator), the maritime digital data space Marispace-X could help in the future as a highly specialised maritime data space based on the approaches and technologies of Gaia-X to support the challenges of monitoring critical infrastructure underwater. For example, by providing a secure and reliable data ecosystem for management, risk analysis and data exchange. In particular, the sovereign exchange and the correct use of maritime measurement data from a wide range of sensors play an elementary role.
A comprehensive monitoring of the maritime critical infrastructure is characterised by a high degree of complexity and can hardly be realistically implemented with today's technical means, says Dr Bruns. Moreover, different authorities are responsible. The Navy Command of the German Navy also has to be involved.
In order to realise a high data and information density, to generate a uniform level of knowledge between the authorities and to be able to react adequately and promptly to threat scenarios, it is of crucial importance, especially for the security and integrity of these infrastructures, to strategically rethink the topic of "Maritime Big Data" across authority boundaries. With the Marispace-X project of the Federal Ministry for Economics and Climate Action, a secure data space based on Gaia-X has now been developed specifically for the maritime world for the first time, enabling data to be stored, processed and exchanged under sovereign conditions. Marispace-X provides security authorities with a high level of control and transparency over access to data, including the ability to restrict access to specific users or groups of users. This helps to protect the confidentiality and integrity of data and minimise potential security threats.
