north.io and Kiel Marine Science present Maritime Database Project at Digital Week Kiel
Kiel. Last week, together with Kiel Marine Science (KMS), we presented the maritime digitisation project Marispace-X and the two use cases Munition...
For the first time, the Kiel-based company north.io GmbH is participating in the Digital Week Kiel from May 07 to 13, 2023, together with Kiel University (CAU). The future festival in the north is a hotspot for digital topics, trend radar and knowledge cloud.
"After winning the past Digitization Award Schleswig-Holstein, our participation at the Digitization Week is a natural home game, because the digitization of the seas is one of the topics of our time."
says Jann Wendt (36), CEO of north.io GmbH, initiator of Marispace-X and alumnus of CAU.
What are the benefits of the European cloud initiative Gaia-X for the future of our maritime data? How does the maritime digitization project Marispace-X help the energy transition? How can we help find and recover hidden munitions in the sea? What are the future opportunities for students in maritime digitization?
Effective protection of critical infrastructure requires efficient underwater data management. (Marispace-X):Environmental geographer Jann Wendt will answer these questions together with Natascha Oppelt, professor at CAU in their lecture on May 11 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the premises of north.io GmbH in the Science Park (Einsteinstrasse 1, 24118 Kiel). They will also provide insights into their use cases 'Biological Climate Protection' and 'Ammunition in the Sea' which Oppelt and Wendt are leading.
"Contact with science is of great importance to us as a research-oriented company. In order for the state of Schleswig-Holstein to remain at the forefront of maritime digitization, we are dependent on exchange with, but also on young talent from the universities."
says Jann Wendt.
Incorporation of remote sensing and aerial photography data play an important role in seafloor analysis. (Marispace-X):
"Since satellite-based research of seagrass beds, for example, generates large amounts of data, we need projects such as Marispace-X. This is the only way we can also meaningfully assess the potential of biological climate protection. To mitigate climate change, we now need to link both technical and natural processes,"
adds Natascha Oppelt, who heads the Earth Observation and Modeling (EOM) group at Kiel University's Institute of Geography and is participating in the Digital Week event together with Professor Matthias Renz from the Institute of Computer Science at CAU. Both researchers are involved in the marine focus of Kiel University, Kiel Marine Science (KMS).
Following the talk, there will be the opportunity to exchange ideas with the project partners about Marispace-X, data spaces and future opportunities during a cozy get-together and to get to know the company north.io GmbH.

Marispace-X is a project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economics and Climate Action in the context of Gaia-X. The goal is to build a maritime data ecosystem that allows stakeholders from business, science, government, and NGOs to securely manage, distribute, and analyze data collected about and from the ocean based on European standards and values, and to use this to gain new insights and develop new innovative solutions and services in the future.
By developing this digital ocean ecosystem, the project consortium addresses several key challenges of this decade at once, such as climate Change, sea protection and digital transformation through numerous practical use cases, including: Offshore Wind, Biological Climate Protection, Munitions in the Sea, and the Internet of underwater things.
The project consortium is led by the software developer north.io GmbH and the cloud provider IONOS. Consortium partners besides are the maritime Big Data specialist TrueOcean, the Fraunhofer IGD, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the Stackable GmbH and the Subsea Europe Services, the Kiel University and the University of Rostock. The involvement of numerous other international associated partners and maritime stakeholders ensures application-oriented development in all areas.
