Kiel, Germany. “At north.io, we are committed to leveraging technology to tackle pressing maritime challenges”, says Jann Wendt (north.io CEO and initiator of the Kiel Munition Clearance Week (KMCW).
“As the driving force behind the first KMCW in 2021, we recognise the importance of bringing together all stakeholders – from researchers, digitalisation experts and policymakers to executives from industry, authorities and navies – to develop practical, forward-looking solutions for dealing with munitions waste in the sea," he emphasises.
The Ministry of the Environment of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein is hosting the KMCW25 in cooperation with the Kiel-based cloud-geodata specialist north.io.
“We invite all relevant stakeholders to join us in tackling the challenges of old ammunition and become part of the solution. Schleswig-Holstein is taking on a pioneering role here internationally - technologically and strategically,”
says Tobias Goldschmidt, Minister of the Environment of Schleswig-Holstein, in the official press release from December 12.
In 2025, the Kiel Munition Clearance Week 2025 (KMCW25) will focus on the technological innovations that are transforming the munitions clearance sector and will demonstrate solutions across the entire value chain. For the first time, the progress of the pilot recovery in the Bay of Lübeck and the development of a mobile disposal system will be presented. By combining digital expertise with international collaboration, north.io continues to enable safer and more sustainable seas.
While the primary goal of munition clearance is to safeguard marine ecosystems, the work also intersects with securing critical maritime infrastructure, including offshore wind farms, pipelines, and communication cables. The KMCW25 will explore how technologies developed for ammunition clearance can also support the safety and resilience of these essential systems.
Whether you are a researcher, industry expert, government official, Navy specialist, policy maker or environmentalist, the KMCW25 is your opportunity to
We look forward to welcoming you to Kiel in June 2025, the “epicenter” of munition clearance innovation, as we work together to solve one of the most pressing challenges facing our oceans.
Registration for the KMCW25 will open in January 2025 and will be announced.
